According to the World Food Programme, nearly half of all child deaths are related to malnutrition. Undernourished children who survive their first 5 years of life are likely to be stunted and will never reach their full mental and physical potential.

Healthy Niños Honduras offers several forms of aid to those in need, and one of them is the Nutrition Center located in San Francisco de Yojoa. During their 1-3 month stay at the Nutrition Center, families receive food and medical care, as well as health and hygiene education. By the time they return to their communities, they are not only in good health, but they also have the knowledge and some resources to continue taking care of themselves!

Whenever we visit communities, we promote preventive rather than curative medicine. We strive to equip the Hondurans with knowledge on preventing illness, rather than being the primary providers of short-term care. The HNH Staff teaches the communities about the importance of hand washing, preventing intestinal parasites, fortifying food with micronutrients, and other important topics.

Throughout the year, HNH also holds community leader trainings. In every community that HNH visits, a leader or two are assigned to oversee the improvement of the health in their community. These leaders attend periodic trainings to learn more about important practices such as identifying malnutrition, providing micronutrients & vitamin A, and filtering water.

Intestinal parasites play a major role in the malnutrition of a majority of children living in poverty. Healthy Niños Honduras is grateful to receive the Worm Project’s support in providing deworming medicine to children and families throughout Honduras. When children come to our Nutritional Center and are treated for their intestinal parasites, by the end of their stay the changes in their appearance and energy levels are often incredibly apparent.

As we all know, the Pandemic is affecting people all over the world. Many countries have taken measures to contain the Pandemic and thus reduce the number of infected and deaths. However, many of these measures had a negative impact on the fragile economy of Honduras, where the majority of the population depends on daily work. This has transformed into an ever growing need for food for the many vulnerable families living in rural areas of Honduras.

At HNH, we are working to combat this incredible need for food. Our staff is regularly visiting the borders of the neediest communities to bring them the food they so desperately need. We have been distributing fortified rice and beans for several months now, and we will continue to do so as long as we are able.

​In the rural communities of Honduras, people rely on unsafe water sources, such as small springs and wells that often carry bacteria and parasites. Because of their reliance on these natural water sources, they also often struggle during the dry seasons.

A couple years ago, HNH began to provide a home water filtration system to help combat the problem of a lack of clean water. For only $40.00, we can buy a Water Filtration System that can provide clean, safe water for a family for over 60 years, as long as it is properly maintained!

Each year, we send a handful of teams to Honduras to perform our outreach brigades. During these brigades, the sick can see a doctor and receive medicine, people with various dental issues can see a dentist, and poor families have a brand new concrete floors poured into their home.

We also hand out eyeglasses, toys, deworming pills, work gloves, sewing kits, and other little things to help improve quality of life however we can. If we have extra time during the brigade, we even will play soccer with the children!
